The county of Pułtusk is one of 38 landed units within the biggest province of Mazovia and one of 308 landed counties within Poland i the total number of 373 all Polish counties (landed and municipal).
The unit is located in the north-central part of the Mazovian province, covers 829 sq km, i.e. 2.33% of the total province area. Pułtusk county has got the population of about 52,000, including about 20,000 residents of Pułtusk municipality, i.e. 36.9% of all the county population.
The county of Pułtusk was first chronicled in 1797 when, by force of a patent, the grounds were incorporated into the Prussian state and soalled Prussia of Nowy Dwór was divided into two departments with their capitals in Białystok and Płock.Every department was further broken up into counties. The county of Pułtusk was located within the limits of the Płock department. The scope of this unit changed due to various historical events and encompassed a few communes or “gromada” units.
Pułtusk county (in its from 1945) was eliminated by force of the law of 1 June 1965 introducing the nwe administrative division of Poland. Pułtusk was made then a town-commune and was included into the newly established Ciechanów province. As a result of the administrative reform of 1 January 1999 counties were again introduced as units of local self—government taking upon tasks over the commune level. The new county of Pułtusk comprises communes of: Pułtusk, Gzy, Obryte, Pokrzywnica, Świercze, Winnica, Zatory. Pułtusk municipality, one of the oldest cities in Mazovia that played an important role in the history of Poland, is also the seat of local government, i.e. County council, management board for the council and the county executive.
The 16 c.referred to as the Golden Age was especially memorable in the 1000 years long history of the town. The patronage of Płock bishops residing in Pułtusk and the economic boom of the town created favourable conditions for intellectual and cultural development.
The historical market square, according to tourist guidebooks the longest in Europe, is one of the most interesting attractions of Pułtusk. It is a venue for many cultural events.
The historical Castle of Pułtusk – Polonia House is located in a beautiful park on the Narew river, on the edge of the Biała Forest, only 60 km from Warsaw. The Renaissance-style castle interiors showing outstanding historical qualities are used also for other purposes. The hotel complex comprises restaurants, a cafe, a night club, conference rooms, a concert hall, a fireplace room and a billiards room. The surrounding grounds have been comprehensively developed and maintained. A sports and recreation centre was established with sports fields, tennis courts, a marina, a camptrips, rides in chaises, sleigh rides and meetings to the music of the castle band at a bonfire combined with roasting a wild boar or a lamb are additional attractions.
The established in 1994 Higher School of Humanities(WSH) in Pułtusk plays an important role in the development of Pułtusk. It was ranked first(in years 1998-2001) as the best private higher school in the category of non-business schools on the list combined by “Wprost” weekly. It is also counted among higher schools of the “international class”. In September 2000 the School was accepted as a member of the International University Association Compostela. As the second non-state academy it was given the right to grant the “doktor” (Master degree). In Marth 2001 the WSH was also accepted (as the second non-state higher school) as a member of the Convention of Presidents of Academic Polish School.
